When living in an area that gets pretty hot throughout the year, the last thing you need is your AC unit to stop working. Not having AC can become a huge headache. Cold air inside our homes is one of those things that we’re so used to having that we don’t know what we have until it’s gone.

When you realize that your AC unit isn’t working properly, the whole house might switch into panic mode. One main cause of AC unit troubles is a freon leak. Although this isn’t the only reason why your AC might not be working correctly, it is one of the first things to rule out.

Here’s how to tell if your AC unit has a freon leak.

1. Your Unit Isn’t Blowing Cold Air

If your AC unit is blowing air, but the air isn’t cold, then it most likely needs more freon. To check the temperature of the air blowing out from your unit, head towards the vents in your house. You can set a thermometer inside one of the vents and wait to see what it reads.

If the air isn’t blowing as cold as it should, then you know it’s time to check for a freon leak.

2. Your Unit’s Coils Are Frozen

Have you ever woken up in the middle of the night sweating because the AC unit isn’t working properly? Have you ever come home after a long day at work to what feels like a sauna? Head over to your AC unit and remove the air filter.

When there’s not enough freon in the system, the coils won’t absorb heat correctly. When this happens, they freeze and cost you money. If you remove the air filter to find a frozen system, then you know that it’s in need of more freon.

3. Your Unit Takes Longer to Cool Your Home

You might not have an exact time down to the minutes of how long it normally takes your AC unit to cool down your home. However, after running your AC for a while and the air and your home not feeling cooler, you’ll begin to notice that something’s wrong. It’s the job of the freon to absorb the heat within your home and release it outdoors.

If there’s not enough freon in your system, it could take much longer for your home to cool down.

4. Your Unit Makes Hissing Noises

If there is a freon leak, the leak is caused by a small hole or crack within the coils that help circulate the freon. When there’s a leak present, you might hear a hissing noise coming from the coils. This is the freon leaking from the unit.

Do keep in mind, though, that not all hissing sounds are a freon leak, so you will need to do more research to determine the culprit.
