1. Check Your AC’s Filter
The air filter on your AC can get clogged up with dirt and dust pretty easily. If this happens, your AC unit won’t be able to cool air as effectively. This means higher indoor temperatures as well as an increased electricity bill!
It’s very easy to forget about these filters, so they should be your first port of call. Thankfully, on many models they’re also designed to be replaced, so you can buy replacements fairly cheaply. If your unit is equipped with a permanent filter, then you’ll need to clean it by hand: we’d recommend soaking it in a white vinegar solution to make this process easier.
2. Clean Your Condensers
The condenser is one of the most important parts of your AC unit, but over time, this too can get clogged up with dirt and dust. If the fins on the condenser are clogged, you won’t be able to keep your home cool effectively.
Cleaning the outdoor condenser is very easy. You should be able to get it clean just by blasting it with your garden hose.
3. Check the Ductwork
The ductwork is responsible for carrying the cool air around your house, and if it’s damaged, you’re not going to be able to take full advantage of your AC, and your bill will increase too!
Checking your ductwork isn’t a particularly difficult task, at least, not as part of routine maintenance. You should take a look at where the ducts meet your walls and check that they aren’t loose. If you feel cool air around the ducts when the AC is on, the seal could be broken.
4. Check Your Thermostat Settings
Your thermostat most likely has a timer built-in, so you should make sure that it’s set accurately. If you’re blasting very cold air into your home when you’re at work, all you’ll achieve will be a sky-high power bill.
Set the temperature to a smart level and ensure that it’s set to turn on when you’ll be home.
5. Consider Calling Out a Technician
If you’ve not checked your AC in a while, there are some parts of the system that are very difficult and time-consuming to check. If this is the case, you may want to consider calling out a technician to ensure you have cool air when you need it!
